The Science Creative Quarterly (SCQ) is not a quarterly, but instead publishes new material at a non-linear rate. Currently, it is sleeping and in a sort of stasis (turpor?) It used to seek science writing of any genre, and your contribution would have involved checking out our submissions guidelines.

The Science Creative Quarterly (SCQ) has a single print edition so far (half SCQ pieces, and half fake science journal – see here for more details). Also, badges?

Stay safe everyone!

A BIOCHEMIST’S BOOKLIST

Are you a fan of literature? Whether you have a background in science and are looking for your next great read for those wait times between gel runs, or are an experienced literature enthusiast looking to better understand aspects of molecular biology and biochemistry, this list is for uracil. C.A.Q. – Commonly Asked Questions (or in Science: Condition Adverse to Quality – but don’t worry, the Biochemist’s Booklist is here for that literature quality control.) 1. How do you rate the books? Instead of the age-old star based methods, the Biochemist’s Booklist prefers to assign a component that better describes…

TRUMPIAN SCIENCE: A SHORT GUIDE

Science should be done with all the “best” words. Data is shown via tweets. Folks with “intelligence” not to be trusted. China is mathematically removed in climate change projections. Hypotheses all end with a “CHA-CHING!” Scientific credentials include showing your birth certificate. “Pussy” is a medically recognized term. Citations include lawsuits. Expert peer review still sound, except for the bit about “expert.” All computer stuff to be done by some guy in New Jersey: not Russia. Breibart News is a credible scientific source. Scientific community includes that crazy relative of yours who believes mermaids are real but climate change is…

AN INTERVENTION LETTER TO BRAD, A DEADPOOL FAN

Dear Brad, I love you very much and it breaks my heart to write this letter. For a long time, I believed that your fascination with Deadpool was just a phase. But it has driven us apart. It is clear that you believe you can regenerate limbs like Deadpool, but you are harming your physical health and it scares me. Your belief in your power to regenerate limbs has led to some close calls. I’ve had to accompany you to the emergency room too many times, like when you almost severed your hand with a circular saw. As I don’t…

A BRIEF GUIDE TO COMBATTING MASS SURVEILLANCE

Mass surveillance has been the norm for decades, and is growing rather than shrinking even as public knowledge of it increases. Spy agencies surveil entire countries the world over, targeting political dissidents and minorities more than terrorists and subverting the free expression essential to democratic processes. These practices harm liberty and security alike according to…

MUTATIONS IN THE SEED REGION OF WIZARD mIR-96 ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR HEREDITARY PARSELTONGUE HYPERACUSIS

Annals of Praetachoral Mechanics (2016). Vol 2. Advanced online publication. download pdf ABSTRACT Parseltongue is a rare hereditary trait that allows wizards to communicate in the language of serpents. Wizards who are parseltongue not only have the ability to speak to serpents (parselmouth), but also possess the ability to hear ultrasonic frequencies produced by the snake (parseltongue hyperacusis). Genome wide association studies (GWAS) have identified scores of genetic variants that contribute to different wizarding phenomenon. MicroRNAs negatively regulate mRNA expression by binding complementary sites in target mRNAs, with the specificity of interaction being crucially dependent on the miRNA seed region.…

AN INTRODUCTION TO CREATINE

Many profits in the supplement industry are generated by making exaggerated claims about their products. Despite the popularity of such supplements, few are very well researched and the industry itself isn’t well regulated. In fact, one popular pre-workout stimulant, Jack3d, was recently banned in the United States because it contained an illegal dietary supplement, dimethylamylamine (DMAA), that has been linked with the development of cardiovascular problems. Creatine, however, is a popular supplement used for increasing muscle development and athletic performance that has been well-researched and has been consistently proven to produce these effects. Its effects can be explained by basic…
