Note a couple of new things:
1. We’re still working to finally get a badge or two available for purchase (more on this later).
2. We’re on twitter (@sciencescout)! Just science jargon tweets, but you can also use to play along with the science scout drinking game. Basically, everytime the science jargon tweet is mentioned, everyone must drink…
3. We’ll do our best to put up new bagdes as suggestions come in. More suggestions welcome at via twitter through Science Scout David Ng (@dnghub). He’ll occasionally put out a call for new badges, and then you can respond.
4. Also working on getting a little more organized by locale. Have tested this a bit out with a couple of the larger cities – maybe London and New York first, but it didn’t work so well. Ideas for a different strategy (maybe fins a few scout leaders for a particular locale, maybe group according to country is better than city, etc)? Drop @dnghub a line if you’ve got a good idea.

For facebook- whilst I’m usually not a fan of applications (I have nearly sixty in my “blocked” list), what about a Science Scout badge application? Anyone able to build one?
Love the badges! Keep up the Good work!
How about an “I actually grew up and became an archaeologist” badge? With a trowel on it perhaps?
So how do we go about physically instantiating them?
I want to put them on my backpack…
…thank you age of achievements…

Suggestion for another badge.
I can’t help but debunk movie science, which iritates my spouse to no end.
How about: “I’m not fat, the bulge is caused by all my dark matter in my navel”
How about “I’m like a paleontologist, but I do people” badge?
NYC is *not* a good science hub to start out in… it is predominantly academic, and kind of stodgy.
Target San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, D.C. before NYC.

I’d love to see some laser badges!
Jynx’ comment made me laugh. Ace
Just for fun, how about a “Scientists who say ‘NI!’” badge?
Brian — don’t forget da goggles!
“The goggles! They do nothing!”
I was just looking for a science scouts Facebook app, but alas, nobody has done it yet. I can build one, but in return, somebody has to help me finish these grant applications.
You really need a high-performance computing series: “I have simultaneously used [10] [100] [1000] computer cores for Science” (I get 100+ but not 1000).
I’d love to have actual, physical badges as well. As for places to start – maybe Seattle?
How about a “2012 Myth De-Bunker” badge with a “NO asteroid/Earth collision” graphic?
How about “it’s 2010 and I’m still waiting for the function of all the genes in the Arabidopsis genome” badge for all us plant molecular biologists?
Another badge idea: “F1000 said my PhD paper was worth ______”
And for those of us that sort of get it – The “I failed science but I get it now!” badge.
With a nice exclamation point for the actual badge.
:p Since everyone’s posting ideas, why not.
“I survived the Cambrian Explosion” (recipient considers themselves old)
“Differential equations… I soooo get them” (for mastery of the dN/dt)
“C8H10N4O2 love” (has spent more than 48 straight hours awake in the name of science)
What about those of us who traveled to the remote tropics for science and had to get all those frickin vaccines and prophylactics? And risk getting all sorts of other weird tropical diseases and parasites? We need a good badge. Not sure what to call it though. ‘Risked getting all those nasty tropical diseases?’ Level II or III could be actually getting a nasty tropical disease. I’ve had friends with malaria, leishmaniasis, random fevers, etc.
How about a series of “I Lost Body/Facial Hair” for science.
When I was 10, I had to explain to my mother what had become of my eyebrows and the first half inch of my hairline while attempting to make black powder.
Darned ol’ Encyclopedia Britannica had the ingredients and the proportions but none of the precautions.
you can get the badges made for about $1 each from websites that embroider fabrics. i’ve done it before for community work i do – they look simply awesome.
“I have had a machine gun pointed at me while doing science” Badge:
Levels I (learning to operate a fully automatic machine-gun in case it is needed in the field);
Level II (having had a machine gun pointed at you during the course of research, usually in the field, but these days a classroom counts);
Level III (having been shot at while doing research).
Explosions I, II, III please.
I received less credit for some research than I should have.
And for some honest people:
I received more credit for some research than I should have.
(Cheers!)
Not sure which badge I would get for examining one animal inside another. It was a rat in a chicken and both were dead!
I love John’s idea, “I can’t help but debunk movie science, which iritates my spouse to no end.”
But would love for it to be a little more generic…and to include all things CSI and other shows that have magical HPLC and GC that can identify *anything* by putting the tip of a cotton swab into an eppi tube. Does anyone know where you can buy those? It’d speed up my research remarkably.
Well done my friends! You guys have made the most awesome collection of science badges. Very, very impressed Science Scout gang
how about “I’m an ornithologist and I’m afraid of birds”
How about this badge: “I’d create nuclear reactions, if I only had the materials” for the nuclear scientists (not the health physicists that get the radioactivity badge)
[...] affiliation without actually being practicing scientists. Did I mention there are totally awesome badges? Here are [...]
My daily duty caused a building evacuation.
My daily duty caused an office building evacuation downtown.
These are awesome! I would love to see a “I put electrodes on babies for Science” badge (because, well, I do).
[...] “Talking Science” [...]
One with a simple lifebuoy on: “Escaped drowning while in pursuit of science” – maybe with a scale for stupidity of incident.
Is anyone working on a “I became a drug kingpin for science” badge? This would be for science experiments that require (large) amounts of controlled substances.
Also see “Purple Haze of Science” badge, regarding experiments where one actually is under the influence of controlled substances in the name of science.
Hey… Happened upon this Site while trying to determine if have a rather or a mouse as an uninvited guest in my house. This led to a few. Interesting sites about intelligence and then this place. I like it.
I am a scientist who currently is working on exploring the “art of science”. Every discipline has an art and science component. I’ve found that when people learn I am a scientist, their responses vary from awe to fear. I tell them I didn’t do anything to be one… You know different gifts and talents and interests are as numerous as people and then some. I want to demystify it. Everyone does science everyday.
Please keep me in the loop and oh yeah is there a “Science as an art”
Badge. How we approach and communicate science is equally as important as the science itself. I am tired of people who believe they are more intelligent just because they can do science.
