A LETTER FROM LIZZIE THE ZEBRA TO ANYONE WHO CARES

Attn:
Anyone Who Cares
Anywhere.

Dear Anyone Who Cares,

I would just like to let you know why I am writing this letter. I hope that all of you that are living in a wonderful world could care about my world. We all live in the same world, but others live in this world differently. Like me. You don’t know me, but I am pretty sure you have met my family members. I don’t really know you, but I know what you can do. I’ve seen you do things to my siblings with my own eyes. Just because I am not a human doesn’t mean that I don’t have any feelings. What if this world was turned around? Would you like us to treat you like dirt? Lucky for you guys you don’t know the pain that we feel, the sorrow, the sadness. We are here to keep the chain of life continuing. Not to decline. We are not here to make fashion the new hit. Our home now is very hot because of your fancy cars. There is barely any food. I hate seeing one of our striped members gone. I hate saying goodbye at least once a day. I hate having the feeling it is my turn next. I hate all of this. My name is Lizzie and I just told you why I wrote this letter.

This piece was composed during the May 9th session of the Science Creative Literacy Symposia. During this day, students from Admiral Seymour Elementary School were guided through the construction of three aquatic biospheres, and were then asked to compose a letter from something or someone that is “voiceless”, but might nevertheless have something to say. More pieces from this class can be seen here.
